This year’s Global Handwashing Day theme, “Be a Handwashing Hero,” encourages people to wash their hands at home, school and work.

Washing hands with soap helps stop the spread of disease. But what happens when the taps don’t work or there is no hand basin?

The recent diphtheria outbreak in the Northern Territory shows why healthy homes matter.

Between January 2025 and September 2026, the NT recorded 342 cases of diphtheria, including 240 skin infections and 102 respiratory cases. Crowded housing and non-functioning houses can help the disease spread.

Healthabitat’s Housing for Health data shows:

Vaccination is the best protection against diphtheria. Washing hands and keeping skin clean also help stop infections spreading. But people need working taps, basins and showers to do this.

Through Housing for Health’s survey–fix work, local teams check every house and fix broken taps, basins, sinks and other essential ‘health hardware’ (the key health-giving parts of the house) to make sure people can practice The 9 healthy living practices.

You can’t wash your hands without a working tap.
