Introduction

Several Housing for Health Managers expressed interest in improving the efficiency of survey fix teams by having more immediate access to testing tools in the field. The proposal for tool utility belts was discussed and an industrial designer given a brief to develop options and field test the preferred options.

Identifying Poor Environments

The toolbox was formerly placed in a central position in the house to be survey/ fixed and team members would remove and replace items as needed.

Remembering to replace items in the toolbox and preventing access to the toolbox by children for safety reasons was formerly an issue.

Tool Utility Belts : Improving the efficiency and safety of Survey Fix Teams

The Problem

Several Housing for Health Managers expressed interest in improving the efficiency of survey fix teams by having more immediate access to testing tools in the field. Example of previous toolbox used.

The Solution

Designed by Adji Rainow the design included soft leather tool belts with all Housing for Health testing and recording equipment accommodated on the belts. The proto-type belts were tested in Pormpuraaw, Queensland and then modified before final production.

Options for Team Members and Team Leaders were developed. They included water bottle pouches (health and safety requirement) and communication device storage (walkie talkie to communicate with the Housing For Health Manager, Data Manager, trades and other Team Leaders.

Trial Projects

Over 40 tool belts with associated equipment have been manufactured and distributed to Housing For Health Survey Fix Teams around Australia. The belts are re-usable and able to be easily stored, transported. They are cleaned between projects.

The belts have improved Survey Fix completion times and safety in the field. The success of the tool belts has led to a call for soft “fabric” tool carry bags for each survey fix team.
