R&D: New Training Boards

June 17th, 2026

New Traing Boards made for NSW Health.

Taking lessons from the past the new training boards are just about to be put into the field

Housing for Health training boards are used on every project to help local teams identify and fix common faults in health hardware — the taps, drains, toilets, stoves and switches that determine whether a house actually functions. A new version has been developed for NSW Health.

The boards have gone through four iterations since the program began. Version 1 was built on large plywood sheets with matching carry cases — showing lots of health hardware, effective for presenting to a group, but difficult to get on and off a plane. Version 2 moved into hard wheeled cases with a domed exterior, which solved the transport problem but created a new one: the shape made them awkward to present from. Version 3 switched to hard plastic cases with acrylic backing boards, added dust and waterproofing, but only opened to 90 degrees. Version 4 refined the case further with a simplified fixing system, plywood backing board, and a removable hinge pin that made setting up for a training session considerably easier.

The new boards build on Version 4. They are durable, portable, dust-proof, and highly visible.

Thanks to Christian Tietz, Owen Kelly (Dogspike Design & Architecture), and everyone who has contributed to developing and refining the boards over the years.
