NT Indigenous Housing problems

August 1st, 2012

The Northern Territory Government says it is trying to resolve a dispute that has seen work on an Aboriginal housing program in Alice Springs come to a standstill.

More than $1.7 billion is being spent on a national Aboriginal housing program. But in some Alice Springs town camps the project has stalled after workers walked off the job claiming they had not been paid by their employer Maiden Civil.

The Housing Department now says that Maiden Civil has gone into receivership. Maiden Civil claims it has not been paid by the company that hired it, Territory Alliance.

The department says Territory Alliance has concerns about the contractor’s capacity to continue delivering the work required.
But it says it is looking at other options to get the project going by the end of this week.
