Good news from Groote Eylandt

May 24th, 2011

From Andy Irvine the General Manager of GEBIE Civil & Construction on Groote Eylandt

“I am very proud to send you a photo of a big day here yesterday as GCC formally welcomed our first school based apprentices. Trent and Jarenzo came to us on a weeks work experience while we were doing outstation surveys and since then have worked with us every Friday (and any other day they can get away with) and school holidays. They are great young men and we are very proud to have them as part of the crew here. Their work hours will progressively increase over the next 3 years and their trade training will become an equal part of their final year school qualifications. Thanks to all of you who have contributed and we look forward to extending this opportunity to many more school students in the coming months. GEBIE Civil and Construction now has around 45 local Indigenous staff ranging from receptionists to welders, carpenters, landscapers, truck drivers, equipment operators and our all women’s painting crew. It has been very encouraging of late to see a number of more senior local staff join our ranks who bring with them years of working experience and local knowledge.”
